Thanks
I have always wondered if there was a special time to use the alt versions for 4 and especially 7? Or are they completely interchangeable?

I've wondered that too. Whenever I've heard counting - like in Momusu's many games on Haromoni, or some artist counting out - ex. Ryo Owatari of Do As Infinity - he always says "1, 2, san, shi". I've heard Yon used when referring to age - like Koharu when she was 14 would say "jyuu-yon sai desu". Dunno if that helps. And thats only the 4, I have no clue on the 7.

Ar yes, now you mention it jyuu-yon sai sounds right, but jyuu-shi sai doesn't really. It's probably REALLY complicated like much of the different ways of using the same word/phrase in Japanese :D (well I find it complicated anyway lol )

The way I heard it was that "yon" and "nana" are used when saying numbers. However, when counting you use "shi" and "shichi", because it's easier and faster. :)

Just an add-on....
9=kyuu, u can also say it as "ku", just like yon/shi and nana/shichi

Ordinal numbers are formed by putting "dai" in front of the cardinal numbers i.e.:
1st = dai-ichi
2nd = dai-ni
3rd = dai-san
Dates
1st = tsuitachi
2nd = futsuka
3rd = mikka
4th = yokka
5th = itsuka
6th = muika
7th = nanoka
8th = youka
9th = kokonoka
10th = touka
11th = juu-ichi-nichi
12th = juu-ni-nichi
13th = juu-san-nichi
14th = juu-yokka
15th = juu-go-nichi
16th = juu-roku-nichi
17th = juu-nana-nichi
18th = juu-hachi-nichi
19th = juu-ku-nichi
20th = hatsuka
21st = ni-juu-ichi-nichi
22nd = ni-juu-ni-nichi
23rd = ni-juu-san-nichi
24th = ni-juu-yokka
25th = ni-juu-go-nichi
26th = ni-juu-roku-nichi
27th = ni-juu-nana-nichi
28th = ni-juu-hachi-nichi
29th = ni-juu-ku-nichi
30th = san-juu-ichi-nichi
31st = san-juu-ni-nichi
Some add-ons/corrections are most welcomed...XD

^ So it goes like that for numbers huh? But they have different prefixes for person right? Like in Naruto, the 5th Hokage is called GO-DAIME.

@Amirul:
Go means 5
Dai means generation
Me is like our ~th
So basically godaime is just the 5th generation...
